A.J. Pierzynski had 3 base hits at Abner Field as the Auburn Doubledays came
back dramatically to top the Sandwich Sharks by the score of 4 to 3.
Auburn erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs. After an out was recorded, Rich Aurilia keyed the rally when
he drew a walk. Chris Shelton was next and he drew a walk. Aaron Boone then
lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 13th of the season) making Auburn the
winners and sending the 19,355 fans home happy. Although they lost, Sandwich
did out-hit Auburn 11 to 8.
The victory was credited to Brad Thompson(1-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Justin Speier(1-4) in relief.
Michael Smith was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he
volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Lou
Cordero, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you
come up on the short end of one of these!'
