29,727 fans watched an exciting game at Abner Field. The Auburn Doubledays
topped the New York Subway Series by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

Auburn wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 2 runners
on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Kevin Mench who excited the
crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. New York threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Jose Contreras(7-6) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Bob Wickman was credited with his 20th save. Wandy Rodriguez(3-10)
suffered the loss. He gave up 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

The win by Auburn is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in recent
days. Their record now stands at 35-39 - only 2-8 in their last ten games.
Still in a bad slump, with this loss, New York is 2-8 lately and 27-50, worst
in the division on the year.
